How to Overcome Writer's Block By Anthony Smith If you've ever been afflicted with writer's block, then you'll know that it can impede your writing for days, weeks or even months. And while it's tempting to just ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, writer's block is one of those pests that requires active extermination. If you can kill it, then your writing will never be affected. Here are some quick tips that may help you eliminate writer's block for good: 1. Start Writing Now One of the worst things that you can do when it comes to overcoming writer's block is to wait until later in the day when inspiration strikes. By waiting days or weeks before writing, you are allowing your writer's block to grow larger and larger. And once it does, it may not go away on its own. So instead of waiting for inspiration to strike, write now! You'll find that writer's block has little effect on your writing when you're not working on a story at all times. 2. Keep Your Story Under Control Another mistake that people make when they're trying to overcome writer's block is to try to include too much detail in their story. When you're blocked, you may find yourself writing long descriptions of things that are happening, but very little about what's actually happening in the story itself. Instead of writing paragraphs about fine art, focus on the important aspects of your story. For example, you don't need to describe every single room in your house before you start writing about what happened there. Instead, you should focus on giving the reader enough information that he or she can imagine everything that's happening instead of having to visualize everything yourself. 3. Use the Word "But" One of the most effective things that you can do to overcome writer's block is to remove all instances of the word "but" from your writing. If you start your story with "This happened, but then this happened, but then this happened," then don't be surprised when your reader glosses over all of the details of what's happening because he or she has become so focused on figuring out whether or not something else is going to happen next. 4. Be Methodical Writer's block usually stems from a lack in planning and organization in your story. If you're writing a mystery, then it's a good idea to plan out all of the clues and bits of evidence that you need to include before actually diving into your story. If you have a character who is going to have a mental breakdown, then it might be helpful to plan out everything that will happen in his or her mind leading up to his or her eventual collapse. By doing this, you can keep the key elements of your story organized and well thought-out. 55. Be Authentic One way that many writers overcome writer's block is by being as authentic as possible when writing their stories. cfa1e77820
